Patriot Acts

A legal thriller that promises a return to sanity in a crazy, bullied world.

Its most outrageous plot turns will seem as though they’ve been ripped straight from the headlines. It takes place in a fictional, near-future America and centers on the plight of an immigrant teenager, taken from her mother at a border crossing as part of a cruel family separation program. She’s shipped off across the country, isolated and sickened until she’s near death.

Here’s what readers say about Patriot Acts

Brilliant, harrowing book.

It's supposed to take place in the near future; but events may have overtaken it. The regime that decided separating parents from their children was an appropriate border policy would have been capable of all the extralegal tactics recounted here. Happy endings, in the book and real life (elections do matter); but it will make your blood boil if you care about the huddled masses who have built this country. But forget all that -- it's a terrific, page-turning, rollercoaster ride. Hard to believe this is a first novel. Let's hope more are on the way.

This book is very well written, the plot is entirely plausible, and the events could easily happen in the United States today.

So refreshing to see the understated good guys do such a marvelous job of uncovering hatred, racism, and corruption. Left me feeling hope for this country!

I had read Baker's other book,

Death is No Excuse, so I already knew that he has an uncanny ability to make harrowing topics engaging, easier to understand, and even entertaining. While this book is fiction, you can still tell that he has decades of experience in the real-life subject matter. You end up learning interesting legal tidbits about the Patriot Act, guardianship law, immigration law, and courtroom procedure without feeling hit over the head with it. The plot walks a tight rope balance of confronting disturbing life situations that our policies have created while making you laugh and giving you hope for the future. It reminded me that individuals can make a difference even against incredible odds and put a human face on the effect of our decisions as a country.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book-

it captured my attention from start to finish. The characters are complex and well developed. I particularly enjoyed the private investigator character who added another layer of dimension to a highly developed plot. As a lawyer, I also appreciated the attention to detail in relation to the legal system.

The perfect balance of intrigue and clever humor!!

Patriot Acts is a whirlwind ride through the legal system via two compelling lawsuits filed by attorney Philo John Crump.

Crump, a sardonic wisecracker, can’t hide his soft spot for abused kids, whether a Guatemalan asylum seeker or a bullied elementary school student. Full of memorable one liners, fast-paced plot and insider knowledge of the legal system, Patriot Acts takes you from an adolescent psych ward to immigrant holding cages to the halls of a progressive private school -- and onward towards justice with a cliver, stinging wit.”
